After nearly three decades in finance leadership positions, here’s what I know: when a CFO leaves, one of two things happens.

(1) The finance department falls into stasis or chaos, which has a knock-on effect on every single other area of the organization. The new CFO comes into a mess, and spends their first 6-12 months learning what’s what and untangling the knots.

(2) The finance department undergoes a renewal, while still making sure the day-to-day gets done. Old processes are reviewed and updated, long-standing conflicts finally get addressed, the team has the opportunity to grow together, and the new CFO is given a clear road-map for onboarding into a newly-elevated department.
